Announcements for 2/21/2017

§  Basketball has first round playoff game in Lake Cormorant.  Game time is 7:00 p.m.  Go Mavs!


§  Baseball has home game against Madison Central (Jamboree).  Game times are 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.  Go Mavs! 



            Wednesday, February 15th: Interest Meeting the 1st of MAV       Break in room 408

            Thursday, February 16th: Initial Cheer Parent Meeting at 6:30   p.m. in the GHS Library

            Tuesday, February 21st: Deadline for Forms - Turn in to Mrs.     Shramek in room 408

            Monday, February 27th - Wednesday, March 1st: Cheer Clinic at           3:45 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room

      Friday, March 3rd - Cheer Tryouts at 4:30 p.m. ink the      Multipurpose Room (Those trying out be at school no later than          4:00)


§  LUNCH ACCOUNTS:  Please check your lunch accounts.  If you have a balance where you have overcharged your account, please pay it by Friday.


§  Lunch Menu:  Crunchy Beef Tacos, Tortilla Chips, Pinto Beans and Corn


§  Tickets for Night in the Spotlight will be sold during Mav Break outside room 232 on February 21, 22, and 23. Bleacher seats are $5 and floor seats are $10. There are a limited number of floor seats. Tickets will also be available for purchase at the door. We will be announcing our Who's Who winners that night, so please plan on coming if you were nominated!


§  Any girls participating in Night in the Spotlight that would like a 20% off coupon to Once Upon a Dress can pick up one in room 232. 


§  Dance Clinic is March 7th-March 10th with March 10th being tryouts –Mock tryout will be Thursday, March 9th.  $25 fee/Must have updated physical.  Mandatory parent meeting will be Monday, February 13th in the GHS Library at 5:30.


§  AP Exam Registration

            January 17th – February 17th

            Cost: $93

            • Please see an AP teacher if you would like to sign up to take an            AP exam.

            • If you are planning to register for multiple tests, you will            register for             all the tests on one form.

            • All exams are given on specific dates. If you are going to have a           conflict on the specific date please go by the counselors’ office           and speak to Rebecca Cobb ASAP!

            • The AP Exam Schedule is posted outside the counselors’            office. 


§  Attention Juniors: Every year, Portico Magazine features 25 Jackson area high school students who will "change the world". It is time for GHS to nominate 5 of our current Juniors for this honor. Therefore, please turn in your resume with “Portico” written on the top to the Counselor's Office by Monday, 2/27/17 *Resume samples may be picked up in the Counselor’s Office*


§  Legacy Choir will present their Spring Show on March 28 at 7:00pm in the cafeteria.


§  Seniors: This fall, The University of Mississippi will conduct its 33rd Chancellor's Leadership Class (CLC), and we invite high schools to nominate one of the top student leaders in the school to participate.  The CLC meets weekly during the students' freshman year and is designed to provide exceptional leadership development opportunities for members of the class.  Approximately 90 student leaders will be chosen from the class of 2017 to participate in this exciting seminar.  In addition, CLC students will receive a $1,000 scholarship ($500 per semester) for their freshman year.


      Germantown High School can only nominate ONE senior. To be            considered, please return your resume with “CLC” written on       the top to Mrs. Cox by March 1, 2017.

            2017 – 2018 Junior Ambassador Program

            Upcoming Juniors and Seniors who are looking for leadership    opportunities please come by the counselors’ office and pick up           an application.

            Applications are due: March 24th


            1) 3.0 GPA

      2) Must be classified as a junior or senior next year


§  Swim try-outs are March 25th







§  Seniors: Regions Bank is offering possible scholarships to students who participate in their Black History Month Essay contest. More information may be found on the counselor's scholarship page.


§  Seniors: The David G. Hall, MD Memorial Scholarship is funded by the Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians Foundation and is available to all graduating Seniors. The application, transcript and 500 word essay should be returned no later than February 24, 2017. Applications may be found on the counselor's webpage.


§  Seniors interested in attending a Historically Black College or University with at least a 3.2 QPA are encouraged to apply for the NPHC Scholarship, which is due March 1, 2017. The application may be found on the counselor's webpage.


§  The Mississippi Association of Supervisors (MAS) announces the opening of the 2016-2017 submission period for the MAS County Employee Scholarship Program. Applicants must have an immediate family member (parent, stepparent, grandparent, step-grandparent, legal guardian or spouse) currently working for or retired from a Mississippi county to be eligible to apply. Relatives of elected county officials are not eligible. MAS will award up to two $500 scholarships per county and the deadline is March 1, 2017. More information may be viewed on the Counselor’s office website.


§  Seniors: The Tau Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. (Jackson, MS) will award two (2) book stipend s in the amount of $250.00 each to two graduating seniors. The recipients must meet the following requirements:

            *Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 Scale

            *Must be accepted by an accredited 2 or 4-year          college/university and enrolling for the upcoming Fall 2017             semester (Please include a copy of your letter of acceptance.)

            *Submit a complete application and attach all of the required      documentation.

            Incomplete applications will NOT be reviewed.

      Students should mail or SCAN/EMAIL applications by Friday,   March 3, 2017. Applications may be found on the counselor's      webpage


§  The Rotary Club of Jackson is offering scholarships to eligible graduating Seniors.


            1. Applicant must be a graduating senior who desires to      continue his/her education at a college,

            university, junior college, or community college in Mississippi.

            2. Applicants must have an ACT score of 18 or higher (or   equivalent SAT score).

            3. Applicants must have a high school average of B or higher or 3.0 or higher.

            4. Applicants must be in a household where the combined             family income does not exceed $60,000

            per year as determined by the FAFSA.

            5. Applicants must reside in Hinds, Madison or Rankin County.

      Applications are due by March 15, 2017. Applications may be     found on the counselor's webpage


§  Seniors: Alpha Kappa Alpha is seeking applicants for their Florence Octavia Alexander Essay Scholarship. Students must plan to attend a Historically Black College or University with at least a 3.25 GPA and the deadline is March 23, 2017. For more information, go to the Counselor's website and click on scholarships.


§  Seniors: David Thames' of Shelter Insurance is offering one GHS Senior a scholarship! Students must plan to attend an accredited college or university and graduate from GHS in May 2017. Applications may be picked up in the Counselor's office or downloaded from the Counselor's website. The deadline to return completed applications to Mrs. Cox is March 31, 2017.


§  Seniors: The GHS/St. Dominic Scholarship is offered to GHS seniors interested in pursuing a career in the medical field. Applications may be found on the counselor's website and the deadline is March 31, 2017.


§  The Germantown High School PTO is offering scholarships to graduating seniors who have positively impacted the MAV zone. Applications are the Counselor's webpage and are due to Mrs. Cox in the Counselor's office no later than March 31, 2017.




§  Seniors: Delta Sigma Theta is offering a one time $500 book stipend to a Madison county resident with at least a 2.75 GPA. For more information, go to the Counselor's webpage and click on "Scholarships". The deadline is April 3, 2017.


§  The 100 Black Men of Canton is offering scholarships to graduating Seniors with a 15 on the ACT, a C average and at least 8 hours of community service. A 500 word essay is required along with the application. The deadline is April 17, 2017. Applications can be found on the counselor's webpage
