Dear ASE families,
We are enjoying a wonderful February here at ASE! There are quite a few specials events this month. Please mark your calendars with the following activities. Our MAP awards ceremonies for 1st and 2nd grades will be held Friday, February 3rd. This is a chance for us to honor students who have met their reading or math growth goals and those that have met their goals and are Proficient and Advanced in both categories. Our Book Fair will be held the week of February 6th. We will celebrate Valentine's Day parties on Tuesday the 14th. Our 2nd grade play "House Mouse, Senate Mouse" will be held Friday, February 17th. Monday the 20th, President's Day, is a school holiday for all students. Read Across America Week begins Monday, February 27th. We will hold Family Reading Night on Tuesday, the 28th from 5:30-7:00. Please join us for a fun-filled night as we celebrate our love for reading and learning.
Each year in February our school holds a special reading challenge. We call it our 50-Book Challenge. All students are asked to read 50 books during the month of February and record them on the 50-Book Challenge Log. These books can be books read to the students, books read with the students or books that the student reads independently. Students that are reading longer chapter books may record each chapter on their log. All students that complete the challenge and return their log by February 28th, will be invited to dress as their favorite storybook character and march in our Read Across American Parade, which is held during school the first week of March.
We recently completed our second round of MAP testing. Our school goal is for all students to be proficient (61%-80%) or advanced (81% or above) in reading and in math. If your student is below the 61%, we must partner together so that your student has the opportunity to obtain proficiency. Your child's teacher will be sharing the results at parent-teacher conferences, and we will include the most recent growth information in your child's 3rd 9 weeks report card.
We will continue our focus on PBIS this year. Our traits of focus this month are cooperation and fairness. We will encourage students to do their best each day by continuing our Mystery Bus program, The Golden Spoon award, Super Titan Program, and Team Titan Tickets. This month's PBIS Celebration will be held on Friday, February 24th. We will celebrate our Super Titans on February 28th. ASE is a Model PBIS School. Thank you for all of your support in our efforts to provide positive behavior supports for all of our students.
This year we will also continue our focus on arts in the classroom. ASE was selected by the Mississippi Arts Commission as a Whole Arts School. During the 3rd 9 weeks we will focus on all four art forms: music, dance, theater and visual arts. Our theme is "The One and Only You" and focuses on what is means to be "an original." It is an opportunity for students to recognize each other's differences while gaining an appreciation for their own talents. Since February is Black History Month, influential Black artists will be showcased. Jazz artists such as Scott, Joplin, Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong will be celebrated. We will also focus on author's such as Jerry Pinkney, Shel Silverstein, and Dr. Seuss. Visual artists that showcased originality such as Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden, Andy Warhol and Vincent Van Gogh will also be a focus.
We are so happy to have you here with us at ASE. As always, please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns. You are always welcome at our school, and we appreciate all of your support.
