In the Spring, Madison County Schools will extend the 1:M initiatives to Middle School students. Currently, the 1:M is a program being implemented in Madison County High Schools. Students in the 8th grade will receive a Chromebook, while students in grades 6-7 will have a 1:1 device ratio in classrooms. MCS recognizes that access to technology in school gives students greater opportunities to learn, engage, communicate and develop skills that will prepare them for work, life and citizenship. We are committed to helping students develop progressive technology and communication skills.
Is there a fee to participate in the program?
Yes, there is a $25.00 annual non-refundable usage fee for each student, with occurrence deductibles per damage incident. This fee DOES covers the first incident cost. Please refer to the Student Technology Handbook for all costs per occurrence. For the spring semester, the usage fee will be prorated to $10.00.
Yes, each student in 6-8 grade receive a district assigned email. Student’s ability to send or receive email from outside of the District network is blocked. Any email communication between students and teachers will be archive for seven (7) years.
Does every student have to participate in the 1:M Initiative?
Yes, every 8th grade student will be required to participate in the initiative.
What are the procedures if my child breaks a device?
In the event that a laptop is damaged, lost or stolen the laptop user can be assessed a $25.00 deductible for the repair or replacement of the laptop for the second occurrence. Please refer to the Student Technology Handbook for all cost per occurrence.
First damage occurrence: Covered by usage fee and student will get a replacement laptop.
Second damage occurrence: $25.00 and possible loss of laptop take home privileges.
Third damage occurrence: $25.00 and loss of take home laptop privileges.
Will students be able to access ANY website once they leave the campus?
No, the Internet filter provided by MCS will continue to filter on and off campus. The Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) requires our network to be restricted of online adult content. No filter is guaranteed to provide 100% safety at all times, but MCS does its best to ensure that our students are not exposed to undesirable content.
Can students individualize their laptop desktop?
Yes, as long as they meet the guidelines set forth in the Laptop User Agreement.
Can students customize their laptop protective carrying case?
No. Any customization will result in the cost of the protective carrying case of $25.00.
Can students remove their laptop carrying case?
No, keep the laptop in the district-issued.
What if we already own a device and want to use it?
This initiative is all about teaching and learning. We believe that it will be most beneficial if all students use the same device and all software is the same.
Will student files be backed up?
No, students will be responsible for all data on their student assigned device. Students are advised to store their data in their Office 365 and/or Canvas accounts.
What online accounts will each student receive?
Students in grades 6-12 have email and CANVAS (Learning Management System) accounts provided by MCS.
Can I get my home printer to work on my Chromebook?
While MCS will not support home printers, many printers work well with Chromebooks. We are encouraging students to submit assignments
